Went to see The Ordinary Boys last night for another site that I write for sometimes. It wasn't as good as when I've seen them before, but to be fair they have released a crap second album now.
The crowd made me laugh. It was, somewhat predictabily, made up of aging housewives, skin-head chavs and 12 year old girls dressed up for a night in a club.
Quite different from crowds on previous tours. The power of reality TV eh?

I'm not sure you're bein very fair to them, I don't think brassbound is a crap album, it's definitely not a match for the debut, but it has some good songs on it. The first was one of those debuts where it all works- they were making a statement and had 12 great songs, before all the big bro+chantelle stuff. I'm goin to see them in birmingham in april, I can imagine the audience has changed, its always been a bit chavvy though, the 'ordinary army' and all that. I guess boys will be boys got the best reception by a mile? I'm sick of that song now! gggrrrr

I was pretty suprised by the reception the older stuff got, but yeah 'Boys Will Be Boys' and 'Life Will Be The Death Of Me' got the biggest reaction. It was pretty violent down at the front, these HUGE chavs throwing their weight around. But I got through without too much injury.
I bought their very first single the day it came out and loved it. Then their album came out and I got that too. I always found it odd how much of that album they spend singing about how all music is the same when you can actually sit there and say 'on this song they want to sound like the jam', 'on this one they want to be the Smiths' and then Brassbound...?
Brassbound sounds like they got asked to contribute a track to a Clash covers album and then thought 'hell let's do a whole album'. That's not to say the songs aren't good, because the Clash were awesome. But it's sad when you go through pretty much a whole album and list the Clash songs that each track really sounds like. (Off the top of my head 'Life Will Be The Death Of Me' = 'Clampdown')
But I was very impressed by how little of the second album they played. Seeing how many people think Brassbound is their first album I thought the setlist would be heavily inclined towards that, but it wasn't. Which was nice.
End rant.

yeah you're right, preston is in no position to complain about the munadanity of modern music when his book of references stretches to the jam, smiths etc. I honestly don't think they became any more of a copyist band on the second album album though- in going a bit more ska and reggae i can see where u draw the clash comparisons, but the first album was just as derivative. 'Talk Talk Talk' and 'maybe someday' are almost jam covers, but brilliant songs in their own right i reckon. I like it when bands set out their own agenda, that u can believe in- ok, preston's was a bit self righteous, but we can all relate to the idea that modern life is rubbish. Big Brother ruined that for me though, I still like the band and love the first album, but the successs they've gained through the programme will always rankle with me a bit, even if it is the level of success they deserved anyway.
now my rant's over!
